Washington's new Paid Family & Medical Leave requires employers to collect premiums starting 1/1/19. After attending Employment Security Department webinars, updates have been made to our blog. See these updates in red text. More employers will need to pay premiums into the state program than you may have thought.
The individual mandate has been a burden for some. But with its demise, non-traditional coverage, such as Cost Sharing and Direct Primary Care Programs, may be viable options for those looking to reduce costs. Here is a look at these two insurance alternatives.
The feds recently expanded Short Term Medical (STM) coverage to allow for a 12-month policy duration, with renewals. In their version, a policyholder could remain on an STM for up to three years once renewals are taken into account. But, don’t get too excited, states still have the power to restrict these plans, or to outlaw them altogether. Now, Washington state is not one to let a Fed plan stand “as is,” so, to that end, the Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) has been working on their own STM plan rules.
The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner released approved 2019 rates for seven of our individual carriers. Four carriers continue to be in review. The most-watched renewal rating has been Kaiser of WA, which asked for the largest increase of all the carriers (30%). Thankfully, this number has been clipped a bit, down to a 19% increase. Overall, at least 2019 increases will be significantly lower than our 2018 increases were.
2019 Individual rate requests have been published. Since rates are unaffordable for so many in our state, we wanted to see where we rank in the nation. The findings were a bit surprising.
